General FAQ’s

WHY CAN’T WE HAVE MORE LESBIANS PLAYING LESBIAN ROLES IN FILM?

Of course we would like to see more lesbian representation both in the characters and storylines but also in the casting. However, bigger budget mainstream films often prefer to cast bigger names to attract wider audiences and gain more attention for the film to increase likelihood of success and financial return. The money offered to create the film is often tied to a particular well-known global face. What we can do as fans of lesbian film is to continue supporting all lesbian films that are being made that have positive representation. This includes independently produced films from smaller crews and perhaps lesser known filmmakers (who are much more likely to cast lesbians & bisexuals in these roles and priority authentic stories – but equally suffer from drastically lower levels of funding and support – which is why you often don’t hear about them!). In order for these creative talents to have their work seen and continue to make content that reflects our community we should amplify their work. This is why Lesflicks is passionate about showcasing all types of content on our VOD platform which in turn gives a voice to independent filmmakers and audiences.

We also give you, the audience, an opportunity to celebrate the great contribution to the LBTQ+ community made by creatives, distributors, festival curators, media outlets, etc. by creating the Lesflicks Film Awards which are nominated and voted for by you!

WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO FIND LESBIAN FILMS ONLINE?

There are not enough lesbian as it is and finding them can be difficult we agree films (although for every one you’ve heard of there are probably another 10 you haven’t!). Films are often bound by distribution and licensing rights that restrict access to certain regions of the world. Meanwhile, due to lack of funding for lesbian films they usually don’t get the luxury of having much marketing or promotional presence online. The Lesflicks mission aims to change this trend by ensuring all filmmakers that put their content on our VOD platform are given a good share of any financial return from subscribers viewing their content. https://lesflicksvod.com/

Plus, our Film Database helps direct viewers to legal ways to watch films and find out more about them. https://www.lesflicks.com/films/

WHY DO I ONLY SEE LESBIAN HISTORICAL DRAMAS IN CINEMAS?

Studios and the “big-decision” makers behind films very much base their decisions on what films to invest in on numbers collated from past films including the financial return obtained and number of viewers. To them, investing in a storyline that has not been proven to have a sizeable audience seems like a risk, and one that they are unlikely to take. Therefore, it is often the case that you will see a run on films with similar themes including historical dramas as it is believed that these stories would be more reliable at drawing in an audience based on past experience. Lesflicks hopes to change this mentality by encouraging any fans of LBTQ+ films to join our growing number of subscribers as well as people who purchase our rentals because we can then collate these numbers to help filmmakers make a better case in support of their work when applying for funding.

WHY ARE THERE SO FEW LESBIAN FILMS ON MOST VIDEO ON DEMAND STREAMING PLATFORMS?

Herein is a vicious cycle of studios and streaming platforms not believing that there is a big enough audience for LBTQ+ content to warrant putting more of it up on their platforms or helping to create any. In addition, some distributors are so concerned as to the lack of income they ask for four figure sums in advance to gain access to the film (which results in the film often sitting on the shelf). To have a better presence as an audience we need to shout more about these films that we love on our social media, pay to watch the content through legal methods, even submit requests direct to the streaming platforms to see the films or series that you want. Until we are more visible and vocal as a paying audience, we will not be seen or heard, and this reflects in the lack of representation seen in the content being chosen for mainstream platforms.

Don’t forget that the Lesflicks VOD platform was designed with you in mind! With all w/w stories in one place you don’t have to worry about searching tirelessly through so many heteronormative films and possible queerbaiting content to find the LBTQ+ representation you want. https://lesflicksvod.com/

WEBSITE AND FILM DATABASE QUESTIONS

WHY ARE THERE FILMS ON THE FILM DATABASE THAT AREN’T ON PLATFORM?

At Lesflicks our mission is to bring lesbian & bisexual content to queer womxn across the globe. For that reason, we’ve created an LBTQ Film Database with the aim of cataloguing all the LBTQ content made over the years, so that you may find out that it exists, watch the trailer, and also find a legal and safe way to enjoy the content!

We would love to make everything accessible from our website and VOD platform to make it easier on our audience to access any content that is out there but obtaining the licenses for films is a slow process and each title comes with a costIf a title isn’t available to stream on LesflicksVOD, we’ll try our best to direct you to another site or service where you can! It’s all part of our goal to #AmplifyLBTQFilm!

Remember you can request a title be added to our VOD platform using the form here: https://www.lesflicks.com/request-a-film-or-web-series/

And filmmakers/distributors can submit their content to Lesflicks using this page: https://www.lesflicks.com/watch/submit-content-to-lesflicks/

COMMUNITY AND EVENTS QUESTIONS

WHY DO WE NEED TO REGISTER IN ADVANCE FOR EVENTS?

Pre-registration is required because it helps us to monitor participants to keep the event space safe. We have had no problems at our events on zoom (we ran over 100 events in 2020 so the security in place works!). It also enables us to cap attendance to a manageable size to ensure that we can accommodate everyone and allow people an opportunity to contribute towards discussion if they want to

WHO CAN ATTEND AN EVENT?

Any person who wishes to attend an event with genuine and positive intentions to keep the event space safe and inclusive whilst participating is welcome to join. These events are for LBTQ+ womxn, trans and non-binary people to be able to enjoy watching and discussing LBTQ+ films, series, and related topics in a space that is exclusively for them.

Our events often cultivate a welcoming, open, and honest environment in which attendees can be themselves and share their thoughts. We expect everyone who attends to respect others’ comments and to engage in the event all in good humour whilst behaving appropriatelyWe want to build a kind and loving community that we all come to value and can be proud to be a part of; our Lesflicks community.

ARE THERE ANY RULES ON WHAT AN ATTENDEE CAN DO OR SAY?

All our events are closely monitored by a host and you can rest assured that any inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.
Our Lesflicks Code of Conduct includes that you must not:

  • Use an offensive screen name (e.g., explicit language) or avatar (e.g., containing nudity);
  • Act in a deceptive manner or impersonate any person or organization;
  • Harass or stalk any person;
  • Harm or exploit minors;
  • Distribute “spam” in any form or use misleading data;

FILMMAKER QUESTIONS

WHO DECIDES IF CONTENT IS APPROVED?

Lesflicks has a team of volunteer curators who review titles and make collective recommendations, therefore rendering the selection process democratic. The Curation Team does not get paid. They are dedicated to ensuring that representation and inclusion of the broad range of LBTQ womxn is represented on Lesflicks. The people on the Curation Team includes Directors, Producers, Cinematographers, Actors, Screenwriters and other Film Industry professionals. If you’d like to join the Curation Team, email lesflicks@lesflicks.com with the subject “Join Curation Team.”

AM I GUARANTEED TO MAKE LOTS OF MONEY FROM LESFLICKS?

No. There are no guarantees around amounts of royalty income, and you should have reasonable expectations about working with us and about the film industry in general. We pay significantly higher rates than traditional platforms, but we are also newer so our reach isn’t as large.

On Lesflicks, you are paid when people watch your content. For SVOD the PPV rate increases as the subscriber base increases. If lots of people watch your work, you earn lots of revenue. If lots of people subscribe to Lesflicks, the SVOD rates increase for all views. If nobody watches your work, you earn nothing. The Creators that earn the most on Lesflicks actively promote all content, not just their own content, and actively encourage their followers to watch all content on Lesflicks.  Creators with multiple titles on Lesflicks also typically earn more.

If you do not promote your own work, you will not be as successful. This applies to anywhere you choose to distribute your content. Marketing, promotion and advertising is KEY to success. You should always look to put content on multiple platforms and then primarily promote the platform that offers you the largest waterfall royalty payment back to you.

WHY DO SOME CREATORS HAVE “CHANNELS” AND SOME DON’T?

To be eligible for a Channel, you must have a minimum of 3 titles available on LesflicksVOD and a strong Brand Identity. If you feel you meet this criteria, please email lesflicksvod@lesflicks.com to request your channel.

ARE THERE ADDITIONAL MONETIZATION OPTIONS?

Additional options include: Affiliate Program (help us get new subscription signups and earn a commission every time someone signs up), Merchandise Program (Lesflicks can sell merchandise related to your series or film and you will earn a portion of sales), Branded Series (Brands will pay you to produce original series featuring their brand).

VIDEO ON DEMAND (VOD) PLATFORM QUESTIONS

Why should I subscribe to LesFlicks video on demand?

LesFlicks is committed to helping our viewers to watch films and series that they may otherwise not have heard off or not had the chance to discover. Many films with a lesbian or bisexual storyline often do not get distributed; or even if they do get distributed, may not reach many LGBT people who are interested in this content.

In addition to having content that isn’t available elsewhere, we will also have some content that may be available on other platforms. However we pay our filmmakers royalties based on views so every time you watch through our platform. You are also adding to the data we are collecting around the number of hours of content that are watched which can be used by filmmakers when pitching for funds to make further films.

So by subscribing to Lesflicks you are directly supporting filmmakers which is increasing the likelihood that more content will be made.

WHAT CONTENT DOES THE VOD PLATFORM HAVE?

All content on the Lesflicks video on demand platform has been meticulously chosen and screened with our audience in mind. We aim to put together the largest and most inclusive selection of LBTQ+ stories to showcase our community and give you the representation that we all deserve – because everyone should be able to see themselves on-screen! There is a huge variety of short films, feature films, and web series available for viewing and new content is being added all the time.

Our Lesflicks team screens all content to make sure that it meets certain criteria. All the content on our platform shows women loving women, a core lesbian or bisexual storyline, or a lesbian or bisexual character in a positive supporting role. Content that contains homophobia, transphobia or racism is not accepted onto our platform except for some exceptions. These exceptions are made on a case by case basis for content such as documentaries, content that is historical in nature, satirical content, or content that makes it clear that such elements are present in society, but not condoned, tolerated or accepted.

HOW OFTEN WILL YOU BE ADDING NEW CONTENT?

We are building up our content every month. Because we are running this platform as a social enterprise that supports future film and LBTQ+ filmmakers, we are committing to steadily building the content. The more subscribers we have, the more content we will add. This encourages members to spread the word and tell their friends. We need your help to spread the word because it is difficult to get press coverage as lesbian and bisexual women are not supported by most LGBTQ+ or mainstream press as we are seen as too niche or not popular enough.

CAN WE SUGGEST NEW TITLES FOR THE PLATFORM?

Of course! If you are an audience member and know the name of a film you’d like to recommend for the platform, then please feel free to fill in our request form here: https://www.lesflicks.com/request-a-film-or-web-series/. We can’t guarantee we’ll be able to get permission to include it, but we will of course try!

If you are a filmmaker or distributor with rights and would like to discuss including your film on the platform, please submit the details using our film submission form: https://www.lesflicks.com/watch/submit-content-to-lesflicks/

WHY AREN’T THERE MORE FEATURE FILMS?

A lot of feature films get picked up by distribution companies. These companies sell video on demand rights to platforms. However, to date they are dealing with major platforms and negotiating on hundreds of titles. We only want the one or two lesbian titles that they each hold. It takes time to negotiate terms, and they will only enter into negotiations if we have good numbers. So the more subscribers we have, the more negotiating power we have to get to these features, which again highlights how much your support matters to #AmplifyLBTQfilm and get more people engaged and subscribing to the content. In addition, there are some filmmakers who have retained the rights to their feature films and we are talking directly to these filmmakers, which makes it easier for both parties to get the content onto the platform and reaching the desired audience.

CAN I DOWNLOAD THESE FILMS TO MY DEVICE AND WATCH THEM OFFLINE?

There are plans to make this option available at a later date; when we have more content and more subscribers. There are significant additional costs to providing offline access, so we need a certain number of subscribers before we can invest in this upgrade. We are committed to satisfying all your viewing needs as much as we can and as soon as we can. All subscriptions, rentals, and purchases go a long way to helping us realise these goals.

WHAT COUNTRIES IS THE CONTENT AVAILABLE IN?

Lesflicks VOD is run from the UK, however it is a global platform. Most of our independent content is not restricted to a certain jurisdiction and so can be viewed from anywhere in the world. As we bring in more content that comes from distributors, these may be available in limited regions which is decided by the person who has the rights. Most film rights are sold to different distributors in different regions. You will be able to browse the full collection, but where a film is not available in your region, you will see a note advising you that the content is unavailable in your region.

We are keen to link up with women in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and everywhere else around the world to get distribution rights in these locations so if you would like to join our team and help us fast track the access in your area please get in touch! https://www.lesflicks.com/about/join-the-team/

ACCESSIBILITY

We are working on adding subtitles to all of our films at present. This is an ongoing project but we will be adding subtitles regularly to all titles.

WHY AREN’T NEW FILMS THAT ARE SHOWING AT FILM FESTIVALS ON THE PLATFORM?

Whilst films are on the film festival circuit, they are often restricted from being included on platforms in the same way that you can’t buy a film on DVD whilst it is in the cinema. We are keen to ensure that filmmakers get the biggest platform possible and playing at festivals is an important part of that. We can’t take on films that are still on the festival circuit, although we are collating a list of future content so that we can revert back to the filmmaker once that festival circuit is complete. Depending on the film, it may be on the festival circuit anywhere from six months to two years.

IF A TITLE IS AVAILABLE CHEAPER OR FOR FREE ELSEWHERE ONLINE, WHY SHOULD I WATCH IT THROUGH LESFLICKS?

LesflicksVOD is a legal and ethical platform supporting both audiences and creators. We need to support the lesbian film industry as funding is lacking and filmmakers are often told there is no audience for lesbian films. By subscribing to Lesflicks and paying an ethical price, you are directly supporting the filmmakers of the existing films on this platform, and also future filmmakers through the Lesflicks grants fund and by being part of the data proving we are a large and growing audience. We do not recommend the use of illegal sites or unofficial sources to watch any lesbian content. All this does is decrease official viewing numbers of lesbian films and further increases the perception of a lack of a paying audience. This reduces the chances of similar films being made and distributed in the future which hurts the whole community of LBTQ+ film fans. So if you want more films, with better quality and maybe even more famous faces – you have to pay a fair price and watch through an authorised channel.

WHY ARE SOME TITLES ONLY AVAILABLE TO RENT?

The format that we are able to provide these films in is determined by the distributor or film owner. They will decide on the different ways the film can be provided to you. There are three distinct formats:

TVOD (transaction video on demand) which allows a rental for a period of 3-5 days where you can watch one title as many times as you like within that period of time.

SVOD (subscription video on demand) which allows you to pay a fixed monthly fee to watch as much content as you like during the subscription period.

EST (electronic sell-through) which allows you to pay a fee to download a media file that you can keep on a hard drive. Like purchasing a digital DVD.

WHICH BROWSERS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH THE LESFLICKS VOD PLATFORM?

We recommend the following browsers when trying to watch or browse content: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge.

WHY IS THE SUBSCRIPTION IN GBP?

Lesflicks Ltd is based out of the UK. At present our platform only accepts one currency. The platform is working on multiple currency support and we hope to be able to provide this in the future. You will see the local currency amount on your bank statement or PayPal.

HOW DO I CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION?

There are two steps to cancel your subscription to LesflicksVOD:

Step 1 is here: https://lesflicksvod.vhx.tv/help/articles/how-do-i-cancel-my-subscription

Step 2 is here: https://lesflicksvod.com/dashboard/billing where you can change/remove your plan

WHERE DOES MY SUBSCRIPTION FEE GO?

Lesflicks runs as a social enterprise and we are keen to be transparent and open. As such we want you to know exactly where your money is going.

50% goes straight back to the content owners in royalties.

23% goes on the platform technology hosting the films.

27% is used for marketing, administration and running costs of Lesflicks.

WHY IS THERE A VAT/GST/TAX CHARGE?

The EU made some changes recently that means that the platform we are using must issue tax separately to the listed price and list the fees net of tax. This means although we list the subscription price at £5.99, when you to go pay you see the gross price including your local tax. We can’t tell you how much the tax is as it is different depending on where in the world you are. Here are some examples:

Gross prices:

United Kingdom: VAT at 20% (£1.20) = a gross monthly fee of £7.19

Europe: VAT varies depending on your country from 17-27%. Find out how much tax you will pay here: https://taxfoundation.org/vat-rates-europe-2019/

Australia: GST at 10% (£0.60) = a gross monthly fee of £6.59

To work out your local price, we recommend using www.xe.com for currency conversion.

How do I get the best streaming for LesFlicks’ content on the platform?

To get the most out of streaming LesFlicks’ content on the video on demand platform you will need a minimum Internet connection speed of at least 1.5 Mbps. To view high definition movies devices you will need a service that operates at least at a speed of 3.5 Mbps.

The number of devices you have connected to your Internet connection can also affect the speed of your broadband service. For optimal streaming performance, please make sure you have closed any other Internet connected devices or applications that may be using up bandwidth. The quality of your broadband service may also vary at different times of the day, which is dependent on your Internet service provider.

When I try to stream a movie nothing happens?

Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, you may need to allow a few minutes for your film to buffer before the title starts to play. Buffering is when your device is loading enough of the stream in advance so that you can enjoy continuous uninterrupted playback thereafter.

If nothing happens after a few minutes, attempt to play the title again or select another title. If this does not work, please check your Internet connection is working by testing another Internet connected device (e.g. try looking at another website on your computer). We also suggest that you check other household members are not attempting to download large files as that may have an affect on the performance of your Internet service.

What happens if my film freezes and will not restart?

First, we recommend checking your Internet connection to ensure that it is still working, perhaps by testing another Internet connected device. We also suggest that you check other household members are not attempting to download large files, especially torrent files, as this may affect the performance of your Internet service. When you purchase a film it is available for 48 hours so you will be able to watch the film during this period. If you are still experiencing problems, please contact us and we will investigate the matter.
