A Battle in Waterloo
Action History Short, 11 min
During the Battle of Waterloo, Ellen searches for her missing husband in the nearby forest and resorts to desperate measures to survive.
A visually beautiful short that manages to capture a whole romance in 11 minutes
A Battle in Waterloo tells the story of soldier’s wife Ellen (played by the always-superb Jessie Buckley), who goes looking for her wounded husband during the battle of Waterloo. As she walks through the forest, the audience realises that she is really trying to ensure that her lover,
Agnes (played by Sophia Brown), is safe. She finds Agnes wounded, but alive, and together they try to make their way back to their base camp.
At only eleven minutes, this is definitely at the short end of the shorts. Yet at no point does the film feel constrained by its timeframe – the story is perfectly adapted to the format, and writer/director Emma Moffat knows how to play up the strengths of what she is working with: the
costumes and location are absolutely beautiful, and the two leading ladies deliver amazing performances.
Altogether, the historical yet romantic angle of the film fits perfectly with a growing trend of showing relationships between women in period settings. If you enjoyed Portrait of a Lady on Fire, this short is definitely not one to miss!
