How to… watch The L Word using a VPN
For many of us, the realisation that we can’t watch The L Word in our country is just becoming apparent.
Whilst we understand the need to see it by any means necessary, it is essential that this series is viewed via an official distributor. That way the numbers will be counted properly. Why is that important? Well shows cost a lot of money to make, and they need to be seen as financially viable, having enough viewers to continue.
It isn’t our fault that certain countries didn’t pick the show up, or decided to screen them later – but that shouldn’t stop us from having our interest counted.
We also know that avoiding spoilers is going to be near impossible. So we’ve explained what a VPN is and how to use it.
What we must not do is view the series for free (firstly because it is illegal) – any free screening is an unofficial and illegal screening. This includes watch parties online and streamings. The impact of these unofficial outlets? It could be the difference between the show being renewed or cancelled. Lots of people illegally watching the show and not paying may lead the powers that be to think that even if there is an audience, we’re unwilling to pay for content.
Why do I need a VPN?
Distribution is rarely global. It is usually done country by country. Each network only works in their country. Your computer tells the internet what country you are in so you can’t access network channels outside of your country. A VPN hides which country you are in, and can show you as being in a different country. This allows you to access a network channel in another country.
What is a VPN?
A VPN (virtual private network) is a service that encrypts your internet traffic
and protects your online identity.
There are hundreds of them. Some have better access than others. Primarily they are designed for security, but the side effect is masking your location.
Some streaming providers such as Netflix and Amazon have blocked certain VPNs because using them to access content outside of your country is against their terms of business.
Is using a VPN legal?
It’s perfectly legal to use a VPN in most countries. This comes with a few important caveats, however: You can use VPNs in the U.S. – Running a VPN in the U.S. is legal, but anything that’s illegal without a VPN remains illegal when using one (eg torrenting copyrighted material). This is where the importance of using the VPN to pay to access the content is important.
What VPN should I use?
We did some research and NordVPN is one of the most well-known and trusted VPNs.
NordVPN is also offering 3 months free so should suit your needs with little cost. It doesn’t cost a lot and you can cancel at any time.
What country should I connect to for The L Word?
That depends on where you are? Luckily we have a good spread of time zones to choose from. The episodes will be released weekly.
