I Know Her

In the afterglow of a seemingly fated hookup, two women realize that perhaps they have a little too much in common.

I Know Her (2019, Fawzia Mirza) is a quirky, comedy short, about the pillow talk between two women, played by Kausar Mohammed and Fawzia Mirza. They seem to have an incredible amount in common, as the dialogue bounces naturally between them, until they realise that they have more in common than they ever could have expected.

The three-minute picture is extraordinarily simple, but completely successful in capturing an essence of awkwardness that is specific to lesbians. The film is reminiscent of Alice Pieszecki’s Chart in The L Word (2004-present, Ilene Chaiken), and the idea that all lesbians know each other, and are somehow connected. Of course, this conception had existed long before The L Word, but the echoing of this aspect of the lesbian experience is a widely and regularly used stereotype in media. However, Mirza avoids making I Know Her into just another depiction of such a stereotype, by pushing the comedy further than it is usually, and creating an unexpected twist that takes it to a whole new level.

In addition, I Know Her is an excellent representation of queer women of colour, and more specifically, lesbian Muslim women, which is true to Mirza’s filmmaking. The documentary short she co-directed and wrote with Ryan Logan, The Queen of my Dreams (2012), alongside her acting performance as Zaynab in the film Signature Move (2017, Jennifer Reeder), reaffirm the importance of representation in Mirza’s career, and seeing someone do so much for her community, which is too often denied a voice by society, is overwhelmingly inspirational.

I Know Her is a truly wonderful short that is utterly unique, and we can’t wait to see what Fawzia Mirza will have to offer in the future.
